Stimulate your savings when you take advantage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 when you upgrade your windows and doors. The recent stimulus legislation allows for federal tax credits through the 25c-Non-Business Energy Property Tax Credit when you purchase and install qualifying windows and doors.
Hurry—this tax credit is only available January 1, 2009—December 31, 2010!
Qualifying Factors
- New replacement windows and doors must have a U-value/factor and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) less than or equal to .30.
- You must use your new products to improve an existing home. Sorry, no tax credit for new construction.
- The new windows and doors must be installed at your primary residence.
Considerations
- Be sure to qualify products based on a “whole product criteria”, which includes how the sash and frame affect energy performance, not just “glass only”.
- You may need to include the NFRC label and receipts with your tax filing to receive a tax credit.
- If you are upgrading doors, you will need a manufacturer’s certification statement.
- Energy tax credits are “non-refundable”, which means you can’t get more money back than you paid in taxes. Or more simply no taxes, no credits!
